This document outlines the procedures for selecting, registering, maintaining, transferring, and renewing Iraqi top-level domain (.iq) names for non-governmental entities.

1. Choose Your Domain Name

  • Verify domain availability using WHOIS.
  • Ensure the name complies with technical and policy requirements.
  • The domain should reflect your organization and be easy to remember.

2. Choose an Accredited Registrar

  • Select a registrar accredited by the .iq registry.
  • The list of accredited registrars is available at the official website (domain.iq).

3. Review Domain Registration Policy

  • Read and understand the domain registration policy before applying.
  • Policies are available via accredited registrars or the official website.

4. Provide Required Information

You must provide the registrar with:

  • Registrant name and contact details
  • Email address (must be active)
  • Phone number
  • Administrative and technical contacts
  • At least two DNS name servers

⚠️ Ensure information accuracy.

5. Domain Registration

  • The registrar submits the application.
  • Approval is subject to compliance with .iq policies.
  • Final approval is issued by the registry authority.

6. Domain Publication

  • After registration, the domain becomes available within:

    • Typically 24 hours
    • Maximum 72 working hours

7. DNS Update and Activation

  • The domain becomes active after DNS propagation worldwide.

8. WHOIS Information

  • Domain owner information is stored in WHOIS.
  • Some data may be protected according to privacy policies.

9. Verify Your Domain

  • Check your domain status once notified of activation.

10. Domain Update

  • Updates are usually free of charge.

11. Domain Deletion

  • Expired domains enter a suspension period (up to 50 days).

  • During this period:

    • The domain is inactive.
    • Renewal is still possible.

13. Domain Transfer

  • The domain owner may transfer the domain to another accredited registrar at any time.

14. Transfer Fees

  • Transfer is treated similarly to a one-year renewal.
  • The registry is not responsible for financial disputes between owner and registrar.

15. Registrants Outside Iraq

  • Required documents must be authenticated by Iraqi embassies/consulates within 6 months.
  • Otherwise, the domain may be deleted without liability on the registry.

16. Transfer Steps

  1. Choose a new accredited registrar.
  2. Submit a transfer request.
  3. Transfer is completed after required approvals.

17. DNS Name Server Change
